Biblical Reflections on Co-Creating with the Redeemer

The Bible does not explicitly answer questions about co-creating with God and discerning whether to try to have children. In consulting Scripture regarding contemporary concerns, one needs to go beyond historical exegesis. Reading Scripture as God\u27s Word requires seeking what God, the divine author of all of Scripture, is currently saying in the biblical passages under study. The primary foundation for biblical teaching about marriage and family is Genesis, especially concerning God\u27s original intention in creating marriage (Gen 1-2). Humans are created in the image of God as male and female, and marriage is the two becoming one flesh. Most of Scripture treats adjustments that were made after marriage and family were gravely wounded by human rebellion against the Creator\u27s plan (Gen 3). The Book of Ruth demonstrates the broader familial contexts and purposes of marriage beyond the couple. The Song of Songs is a powerful poem celebrating the passion, emotion, and love in courtship and marriage. The prophet Hosea portrays the relation of God to his people as that of the covenant between husband and bride, on which the New Testament Letter to the Ephesians builds, in comparing Christian marriage to the mystery or sacrament of Christ\u27s marriage covenant with his bride, the Church. Sayings of Jesus make obvious that after death there will be no more purpose for marriage and procreation in our immortal resurrected bodies. St. Paul develops the meaning of celibacy from these eschatological sayings of Jesus, and discusses a topic closely related to the topics in this conference: temporary sexual abstinence in marriage (see 1 Cor 7). The more synthetic section on theology of the body and magisterial summaries of biblical teaching is structured by the topics introduced in Vatican II\u27s Gaudium et Spes: how marriage is ordained toward begetting and educating children; warnings against lust toward one\u27s spouse as supporting communion of persons of equal dignity in marriage; openness to life and Jesus\u27 welcoming of children; co-creating and receptivity to God\u27s gift of life in marriage; and discernment about bringing new life into the world. Specific answers will require the cooperation of theologians and others, as is manifested in the schedule of papers in this conference

Theo-Poetics: Figure and Metaphysics in the Thought of Hans Urs von Balthasar

Hans Urs von Balthasar (1905-1988) was a Swiss-Catholic theologian of great importance in the twentieth century. His formal education included a doctorate in literature, which resulted in a massive, three-volume work on the state of German literature and philosophy entitled Der Apokalypse der deutschen Seele (The Apocalypse of the German Soul) - and licentiates in both theology and philosophy. Throughout his life, von Balthasar continued to display a thoroughgoing interest in art and theology. With a background particularly attuned to this link, von Balthasar set out to recover the transcendental of beauty in theology, which he argued had been a consistent facet of Christian theology from the beginning, but which had been lost or obscured in modern theology. This project is his theological aesthetics. Still, the question remains unanswered: what relationship does literary, dramatic language have to metaphysics? In other words, in what way does it mean? Do the two ways of speaking conflict or, if related, how are they related? Given the current state of scholarship, it has become necessary to ask the above set of questions in a focused, careful project. To narrow its vast implications, it is also necessary to ask the questions with respect to specific aspects of Balthasar\u27s theology in the hope to establish elements that can be applied more broadly. An attentive examination of Balthasar\u27s use of poetry in his work, coupled with an account of his metaphysics, will help to clarify the relationship between his poetic language and his philosophical presuppositions. Any confrontation with von Balthasar\u27s work must therefore respond to his unique knowledge of both theological propositions and art. This is a difficult balance to keep, and scholarship has struggled to attend to both von Balthasar\u27s theological claims and his poetic manner of claiming them. My task in this dissertation is twofold: a careful exploration of von Balthasar\u27s use of poetry and poetic language, and a detailed analysis of his philosophical presuppositions. My thesis is that Hans Urs von Balthasar uses poets and poetic language to make theological arguments, because this poetic way of speaking expresses metaphysical truth without reducing one to the other

Digital Scholarship Needs Assessment: Binghamton University 2022

As digital scholarship and digital humanities (DS/DH) continue to grow on campus the libraries continue to collaborate with campus communities to ensure faculty, staff, and graduate and undergraduate students’ research, classroom, and learning experiences in these fields are supported. This needs assessment, carried out over the course of the Spring semester in 2022, investigated the current climate for using and teaching digital scholarship tools methods on Binghamton University\u27s campus. While Binghamton\u27s digital scholarship community continues to grow four major needs for support were identified by the community: access to DS/DH resources on campus, building a stronger sense of community, providing a better system of support for those starting and sustaining long-term projects, and creating a holistic approach to engaging in DS/DH research and pedagogy

The 2011 edition of Foundations in Wisconsin marks the 30th production of the print directory and the 11th year of the online version (www.wifoundations.org). The directory is designed as a research tool for grantseekers interested in locating information on private, corporate, and community foundations registered in Wisconsin. Each entry in this new edition has been updated or reviewed to provide the most current information available. Most of the data was drawn from IRS 990-PF tax returns filed by the foundations. Additional information was obtained from surveys, foundation Web sites, annual reports, and newsletters. While the national economic downturn has had a negative effect on Wisconsin foundations the past two years, there are some positive signs of recovery. The total number of active grantmaking foundations increased to a record high 1,324 (with 67 new foundations identified), and the total assets increased by 11% over last year to $6.2 billion. Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission (MMS) Phase 2B Navigation Performance

The Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) formation flying mission, which consists of four spacecraft flying in a tetrahedral formation, has challenging navigation requirements associated with determining and maintaining the relative separations required to meet the science requirements. The baseline navigation concept for MMS is for each spacecraft to independently estimate its position, velocity and clock states using GPS pseudorange data provided by the Goddard Space Flight Center-developed Navigator receiver and maneuver acceleration measurements provided by the spacecraft's attitude control subsystem. State estimation is performed onboard in real-time using the Goddard Enhanced Onboard Navigation System flight software, which is embedded in the Navigator receiver. The current concept of operations for formation maintenance consists of a sequence of two maintenance maneuvers that is performed every 2 weeks. Phase 2b of the MMS mission, in which the spacecraft are in 1.2 x 25 Earth radii orbits with nominal separations at apogee ranging from 30 km to 400 km, has the most challenging navigation requirements because, during this phase, GPS signal acquisition is restricted to less than one day of the 2.8-day orbit. This paper summarizes the results from high-fidelity simulations to determine if the MMS navigation requirements can be met between and immediately following the maintenance maneuver sequence in Phase 2b

The 2012 release of Foundations in Wisconsin marks the 31st edition of the print directory and the twelfth year of the online version. Each entry in this new edition has been updated or reviewed to provide the most current information available. Most of the data was drawn from IRS 990-PF tax returns filed by the foundations. Additional information was obtained from surveys, foundation Web sites, annual reports, and newsletters. Fortunately, Wisconsin foundations are rebounding from the recent economic downturn. While the total number of active foundations (1301) decreased slightly from 2011’s high number, 57 new foundations were identified and two key measures show positive growth. Total assets increased by 12% from last year to over $7 billion, and grants rose 7$490 million, close to pre-recession totals. Navigation Operations for the Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission

The Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission employs four identical spinning spacecraft flying in highly elliptical Earth orbits. These spacecraft will fly in a series of tetrahedral formations with separations of less than 10 km. MMS navigation operations use onboard navigation to satisfy the mission definitive orbit and time determination requirements and in addition to minimize operations cost and complexity. The onboard navigation subsystem consists of the Navigator GPS receiver with Goddard Enhanced Onboard Navigation System (GEONS) software, and an Ultra-Stable Oscillator. The four MMS spacecraft are operated from a single Mission Operations Center, which includes a Flight Dynamics Operations Area (FDOA) that supports MMS navigation operations, as well as maneuver planning, conjunction assessment and attitude ground operations. The System Manager component of the FDOA automates routine operations processes. The GEONS Ground Support System component of the FDOA provides the tools needed to support MMS navigation operations. This paper provides an overview of the MMS mission and associated navigation requirements and constraints and discusses MMS navigation operations and the associated MMS ground system components built to support navigation-related operations
